Water is at the heart of Bangkok and Thai culture. The city’s residents have always lived on and around the water. Originally, Bangkok was built on land reclaimed from the marshes surrounding the Chao Phraya River, crisscrossed by a dense network of canals, the « khlongs, » which long served as the main transportation network. Our design for One Bangkok draws inspiration from this deep and ancestral relationship that Thai people have always had with water. Water also embodies the passage of time: it constantly sculpts landscapes as it flows, shaping valleys through erosion. Water flows from the north, from the forests of the highlands of Luang Prabang, irrigating the central plains and Bangkok before reaching the sea. Through our proposals, we seek to create a resonance with the public by integrating elements inspired by Thai traditions and culture, such as the « art of weaving » or the experience of rice fields.

Inaugurated in 2024, One Bangkok is one of the most ambitious private projects in Southeast Asia. Led by Frasers Property Holdings and designed as part of a masterplan developed by the architects of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), in collaboration with A49, KPF, Benoy, Lead8, and PLA, this project presents itself as a multi-faceted urban superblock: a city within a city.

Spanning 17 hectares, the masterplan emphasizes public spaces and greenery. It is the first project in Thailand to achieve the prestigious LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) Platinum certification.

Seven water features offer a series of aquatic experiences and different levels of interaction. At the heart of the project, the Civic Plaza stands as an oasis: a soothing silence, lush gardens, and fountains that contrast with the bustling life of Bangkok. At the center of this centrality, water plays a key role. The central fountain animates and soothes. The pattern of the jets evokes the alignments of young rice shoots, creating a deliberate contrast between rurality and hyper-urbanity. A way to remind us that, even within a modern metropolis, nature and tradition still have their place.
