The Place des Carmes Déchaux, located northeast of Clermont-Ferrand’s historic center, was originally an underutilized space, dominated by a road interchange, a large parking lot, and an isolated square. In response, the landscape architects of BASE and Plan B envisioned a project to return this space to pedestrians and urban life by creating a dynamic heart of the square, connecting three major terraces and a playful area, where water plays a central role. The water and mist features activate the space, bringing it to life. An ingenious detail in the design of the cascade’s water supply—a graceful curve—creates a striking visual contrast with the rigidity of the viaduct’s structure, adding a touch of elegance and fluidity to the ensemble.
