Just a short walk from the runways of Zurich Airport, Butzenbüel Park offers an unexpected experience: a landscape of calm and nature at the heart of one of Europe’s most dynamic infrastructures. Designed by Studio Vulkan with Robin Winogrond, the park is built upon a unique topography: an artificial hill composed of successive layers—glacial moraine, infrastructure fill, and planted forests—that today forms a hybrid landscape, both natural and man-made.

At its summit, a 30-meter-diameter circular platform showcases water and mist. The water mirror lies flush with the surface, while mist jets create an artificial cloud that visitors can walk through. This sensory and immersive experience evokes that suspended moment when an airplane ascends and pierces the clouds. Here, water becomes a poetic medium: it materializes the sky, captures light, and subtly connects the landscape to its airport context. Delivered in 2021, the project was awarded the LILA – Landezine International Landscape Award 2021 in the Public Landscapes category.
