At the heart of the “Gratte-Ciel” district lies Place Lazare Goujon. Built in 1932 and pedestrianized in 2007, this remarkable architectural ensemble bears witness to a visionary approach far ahead of its time. The square, the lung of the neighbourhood, is framed by the Town Hall and the Théâtre National Populaire. Its mirror-like basins reflect the daily life of this modern agora and have become the favourite playground for the district’s children.

Under the direction of the landscape architects at In Situ, artist Philippe Favier created mosaics made of painted, enamelled glass. “These crumbs of stars, once arranged on the bottom of the basins, were set in a night-bitten resin…”, he explains. His intervention transforms the basins into true works of art, which he calls “celestial vegetable gardens”.

The water arches animate the space and add a new dimension to the design. The visual interplay of these moving curves, varying in height and length, is captivating and soothing.
