The colorful mosaic of the ceramic cladding also tells a powerful story. “Pinjah,” a work by Noongar artist Sandra Hill and ceramicist Jenny Dawson, draws inspiration from the Dreaming of the Milky Way, the Noongar six seasons, and the meeting place of the six paths, where Aboriginal peoples traditionally gathered by the water. Its flowing design represents Derbal Yerrigan (the Swan River), with blue circles marking Hyde Park Lake and Lake Monger, two of Perth’s last remaining lakes. The black circle symbolizes the enduring presence of the Noongar people, while the red circle embodies the bloodline, that timeless link between past, present, and future.
Rich in meaning and history, this mosaic is a lasting tribute to the deep connection between the Noongar people and their land.
