Thessaloniki, Greece’s largest and most influential northern city, is a place layered with the memories of its history and cultures. The city’s drinking water primarily comes from natural sources, including groundwater aquifers and local reservoirs. With climate change intensifying, sustainable water management has become a major challenge for the capital of Greek Macedonia.

For the ConfEx Park project, the water management strategy for fountains and irrigation follows a hybrid model. It relies on collecting rainwater from impervious surfaces — such as roadways and the roofs of new buildings — for reuse in irrigation and to supply the vegetated water features using untreated water. In addition, a series of dry swales functions as retention devices, helping mitigate the impact of intense rainfall events. Finally, any excess water is directed to an underground collection and retention system, which also contributes to the site’s overall water supply.
